I was working out at the gym tonight watching ESPN when they reported that he may have died from a disease called "Sarcodosis." If you've listened to me you know that I was diagnosed with the disease in 2001. I was originally diagnosed with cancer, which scared the hell out of me, however I was able to get a second opinion and was informed that I had "sarcodosis." My Doctor, Kristen Keskey is an expert on the disease and was able to get me back on my feet. Sarcoid can effect any organ, including the skin, eyes, liver, etc. The most common is the lung, which manifests itself in enlarged lymph glands in the hilar node of the right lung. It is a self limiting disease and usually passes without too much suffering. It is fatal in 5% of all cases. Some patients with extreme cases require a heart and lung transplant.
I first noticed the presence of Sarcoid when my body began to ache and I couldn't walk for 2 days. My temperature skyrocketed and my connective tissue became inflamed. After about a week of bed rest, a month of taking it easy and some steroids, I was back on my feet and no longer feeling badly. currently the disease is non-existent and I don't expect it to return. Reggie wasn't as lucky and I feel for his family.
I have talked to so many people who have sarcoid, it is amazing that so many people seem to be aware of the disease. The only other famous person with the disease other than Reggie White was the former revlon model and MTV Vee Jay Duff. She has a severe form of Sarcoidosis on her spinal column, she too was diagnosed with cancer and even underwent chemotherapy. She has recovered!
