As most of you have likely already heard, XM and Sirius satellite radio are attempting a "merger of equals." The merger however must be approved by the federal government as it would create a monopoly if approved. I am a Sirius subscriber and personally I like the the fact that I will now get ALL the programming (sports) from both services AND Howard. As I have said in the past, I wasn't a Howard listener UNTIL he started on Sirius and I think the show is absolutely on fire.
The NAB of course is trying to block this merger because of radio increased competition they would like to see the two satellite radio companies continue to struggle, hence the all out assault on satellite radio. As a broadcaster we should ALL embrace new technology as it only provides more opportunity to do what we love. Check out this quote from the NAB's VP/Media relations.
"In coming weeks, policymakers will have to weigh whether an industry that makes HOWARD STERN its poster child should be rewarded with a monopoly platform for offensive programming. We're hopeful that this anti-consumer proposal will be rejected."
What a crock, Howard Stern is a great broadcaster and to attempt to minimize his accomplishments by characterizing his show as simply "offensive programming" is just a cheap and easy and a ploy to garner favor with regulators. As an industry we should all be against any form of government regulation of the airwaves, not pandering to it out of fear.
