I learned last that I am a victim of credit card fraud.
Last week while trying to pay a $35.00 office visit to Cooper's doctor back in Philly, I learned that somebody was using my credit card other than me.
My card was declined by the doctors office so I went on-line to check my statement with the credit card company and to my delight somebody had made a $15,000 PAYMENT for me on my card. Weird considering I didn't have anywhere close to 15k on the card. This card is my "on-line credit card" that I only use to make Internet purchases. There were other charges that weren't mine, including a couple hundred bucks at a Macy's in Corpus Cristi, Texas and some automobile related charges in South Texas as well.
Apparently making large payments on a credit card is the latest scam. Here is how it works. The thief steals the card, makes a large payment with a check that will eventually bounce. NOW, he can use the 15k and whatever the my limit is for his purchases. I can't believe the ways these thieves think of to scam people, they seem pretty smart for a bunch of dirt bags.
Needless to say, I called Capital One and their fraud unit had already put a "hold" on my card and it doesn't appear much damage was done.
Moral of the story, reserve just one credit card for Internet purchases. If your numbers get stolen you will only have to deal with one company.
