The Detroit Lions Director of Security Ricky Sandoval has been battling stage IV pancreatic cancer for the past year and a half. Ricky's particular form of cancer only has a 7% recovery rate and usually only means you have 6 months, but Ricky is seriously kicking this diseases ass!
Ricky and his wife Gael were my neighbors in Royal Oak and are phenomenal people who are always willing to lend a helping hand. They don't talk about it, but they are extremely loyal to the Ford family and the Ford's have been nothing but amazing in helping Ricky battle his awful disease. The Ford's may not win a lot of football games but they certainly are wonderful human beings; people we should be proud to call Detroiters.
An example of Ricky's selflessness is the time he gave me his personal autographed Barry Sanders jersey to auction off during the WDFN radiothon for leukemia. He didn't think twice, he simply went to the closet, retrieved the shirt and donated it to the cause, knowing he may never see Barry again.
I don't know what to say other than to pray for Ricky, you can be proud that he is part of your community. Leave a note at his BLOG, donate to cancer research, who knows, just keep him in your thoughts....
