GreggHenson.com has learned that the reason the Detroit Lions don't want 97.1 Air Personality Mike Valenti on their post game show is because he won't show his face at practice or at games. Local team insiders say ALL of the Detroit teams think Valenti is a "joke" for not showing up at practice or games to answer for his on air tirades.
Personally I think the practice thing is a bunch of garbage. Who cares if a Radio Host goes to practice, hell, most players hate practice. Really, practice is just an opportunity for jocks to berate media for having an opinion, why bother. However, Valenti's absence at games is puzzling. Why not show up at games to chat up players and coaches? The Detroit Sports Rag has even posted that for unknown reason Valenti is forbidden to go to games by his girlfriend? huh? Valenti has even countered the claim on his own web site. Don't understand why a guy who feigns interest in the Detroit teams wouldn't show up and squeeze babies.
I have done an informal poll of 6 Detroit media members and not one has reported seeing him at a professional sports event.
Also, WXYT co-workers tell me that Valenti is so unhappy with his position at WXYT that he has reached out to WDFN for a potential on-air gig. The co-worker has overheard Valenti openly talking about his wish to cross the street to work for Detroit's # 1 sports station, saying that boss Dan Zampillo is an idiot and doesn't appreciate his immense talent.
I know first hand that Valenti's agent is shopping his client all around the country....so far, no takers. As a matter of fact, I have been called for my opinion. More on that later....
No matter what happens, I hope Valenti gets his act together, he has some talent, he simply needs to settle down and decide that he isn't the greatest sports radio host of all time, he's just a guy trying to make his mark. Sometimes a little success can go right to a person's head.
