I think George W. Bush's biggest mistake was not allowing scientists to use EVERY available avenue to find cures for disease. Bush allowed the nut bag right wingers to push him to ban stem cell research and I think he will always be disgraced for his decision. His ban put us 7 years behind in the search for cures for everyday diseases like Alzheimer's, diabetes and cancer. I will ALWAYS hold it against him that he let the nutty right make the call.
In terms of science, I think I'm really going to appreciate having a liberal in office as they are undeterred by the "Jesus" issue and I think scientifically we could use some progressive thought. Think of the possibilities of stem cell research, the pace of change in science and medicine will advance rapidly and we all will benefit as will our parents and children.
I'm no scientist but I'll take the lifting of the ban at face value and hope that all the potential of this research can and will be realized in the short term.
I know left wing Jesus freaks will hit me with the "killing babies" routine, but I'm not buying it. The morality issue is a non-starter. The US needs to take the lead in stem cell research and I hope this is a step in the right direction.
I completely disagree with Obama on many social and economic issues but "unleashing the science" today was awesome, now if he would just stop spending all our money.
