When Brady Hoke arrived in Ann Arbor he made it pretty clear that beating Ohio State and Michigan State were paramount. I agree with his emphasis on the two great rivalry games but a countdown clock to both OSU and MSU really degrade the great Michigan tradition of beating both schools and not sweating it! A short term losing streak like the 3 games to MSU doesn't warrant a cheesy John Cooper-like countdown clock. One could argue a countdown clock for the Ohio State match-up is appropriate, however it also puts way too much emphasis on one game.
Countdown clocks and other motivational tools are fine when you are getting owned as Michigan has by Ohio State but in the long history of the rivalry there is little evidence that it is a necessary tool. It reeks of desperation much like John Coopers antics when he was trying to stop the bleeding against the wolverines in the 90's.
Hoke also has to keep in mind that Michigan finished behind 6 other teams in the Big Ten and emphasising a potentially unwinnable game against Ohio State could send the wrong message to a team that must take care of business against lesser opponents like SDSU, Iowa and MSU.
The countdown clocks aren't the worst thing in the world but Hoke needs to continue to channel Bo and keep his motivation low key and confined to the locker room.
